Familiar Territory
This series, made in 2009/10, features my home city of Portsmouth, UK. At this time I found myself exploring the city via its cycle routes, rediscovering spaces I had not visited for many years, in some cases since adolescence. The landscape is something that feels relatively permanent, but in truth it is in a state of constant transition and renewal. Whilst at some locations I found little change, others had altered dramatically, almost beyond recognition, provoking a sense of alienation, of severance from the past. Even in the short period since this project was shot, these locations have undergone change and some of these buildings no longer exist.
Each image in this series is accompanied by 'GPS' coordinates recording the exact position of the camera at the moment of exposure, information which is extraordinarily accurate and yet at the same time completely arbitrary, having no bearing on memory or experience.
